In Play: WoW

We have decided to add semi-regular posts commenting on the games that we’re currently playing (of which I’ve decided to call In Play @ Hardplay).  These posts will be all over the place – whatever is floating in our heads at any given time.  You’ll be more likely to see a guest post here as well (since I’ve decreased my game-playing this term to avoid addiction) – and I need someone to comment on games.

But first up – Jerremie – who reactivated his WoW account to explore Cataclysm…

“So I have been playing Cataclysm, and I tried out the goblin.  I have never really worried too much about story etc. in WoW, most characters are pretty noble, and generally what you are doing seems right (well most of it anyway) or right enough I didn’t worry.  However I cannot get into the goblin, the arch-capitalism, the greed, the wanton destruction of nature.  I was surprised myself by having to struggle to play a goblin, and then dropping it for a Tauren Paladin to explore the new zones with.

This is interesting for me in light of my using WoW last semester to help another faculty member who had a class looking at online identities, avatars, social media etc..  The students played WoW for an hour and discussed issues of identity in game, it was interesting, but I didn’t think it really applied to me, hmmm…..”  jvc
